Cerastium tomentosum
Snow in Summer   (Zone 2)
The beautiful silver foliage of this species shows off bright white flowers in Early to Mid-season. Snow-in-summer grows to only 8" tall and if provided with excellent drainage and a little bit of summer shade it will form an excellent groundcover. It also works well cascading over a rock wall but does not do well in extremely hot and humid summers.

 

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides
Plumbago  (Zone 5)
A great groundcover for Mid to Late-season interest as its deep blue flowers in late summer give way to excellent bronze fall color. Grows best in full sun reaching only 8" tall, and a well-drained garden soil. Nice in rock gardens or the edge of the perennial border. This plant emerges late in spring and may need a little extra winter protection in Zone 5A.

Delosperma cooperi
Ice Plant  (Zone 6)
Small bright pink flowers bloom all summer on this rock garden beauty! Small, succulent, egg-shaped leaves form compact mounds reaching 3-6” tall on this nice groundcover. A South African native, this plant prefers hot dry sites in full sun, which makes it quite useful for those hard to plant areas.
 

Delosperma nubigenum
Hardy Ice Plant (Zone 5)

A wonderful plant for poor soils! This ice plant features bright yellow flowers that bloom atop tight spreading mounds of light-green succulent leaves. Plants grow rapidly and are nice to use in rock gardens or edging along the front of the border. Plants reach 3" tall and grow best in full sun and well-drained soil.
 

Dianthus gratianopolitanus ‘Firewitch’
Cheddar Pinks  (Zone 4)
This is another "must have" Dianthus selection. ‘Firewitch’ is a tough, 6" plant with unbelievable magenta blooms and blue-green foliage. An excellent low growing, clump forming selection blooming heaviest in Early to Mid-season with rebloom occurring periodically throughout the summer. An excellent choice for the perennial border. Like other Dianthus cultivars, plant in full sun and well-drained soils, and deadhead to promote continuous bloom.

Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus'
Purple Wintercreeper  (Zone 5)

One of the most common broadleaf evergreen groundcovers. Green foliage turns to a beautiful burgundy-purple in winter. Great for use along foundations, as an edging, or for mass plantings. Grows to 12" tall.

Galium odoratum
Sweet Woodruff  (Zone 4)
Sweet Woodruff is a very versatile groundcover for the part-shade to shade garden. It grows 8-12" tall and produces masses of ¼" white fragrant flowers in Early-season. It responds well to shady, moist, well-drained areas. Great for naturalizing and mass plantings. This is an awesome native perennial that is also used for sachets and nosegays. Sweet Woodruff is also considered an herb used for flavoring May wine. If placed properly, Galium will spread vigorously and weave a shade garden together.


Gypsophila repens
Creeping Baby's Breath  (Zone 3)
This alpine baby's breath is a wonderful choice for a rock garden or stone wall. Small white flowers are produced from late spring to early summer on 8" tall plants. Plants perform best in full sun and dry sandy soil. Plant spread reaches 18" wide.

Gypsophila repens ‘Rosea’
Baby’s Breath  (Zone 3)
Another alpine Baby's breath that is great in rock gardens, stone walls, or the front of the border. Similar to the straight species only this variety has rose-pink flowers and grows only 4" tall. ‘Rosea' is a very long bloomer beginning in Early season and continuing all summer. Plants must have a very well drained soil and perform best in full sun.

 

 

Lamium maculatum 'Red Nancy'
Spotted Dead Nettle  (Zone 3)
Rosy-red flowers bloom in late spring on top of beautiful silver leaves that are lined with a green margin. Plants grow best in average to moist garden soil and part shade conditions. Grows to 8".

Lamium maculatum ‘White Nancy’
Spotted Dead Nettle  (Zone 3)
‘White Nancy' grows 6-8", and as the name implies, bears white flowers over the typical silvery-green variegated foliage. It requires average to moist garden soil in part-shade. An excellent, tough groundcover capable of filling in open spaces in the garden. If it gets too open or leggy, it can be easily be pruned back quite hard to rejuvenate new clean basal foliage. Although the flowers are a bonus, Lamiums are primarily grown for their bright silvery foliage. This blooms in Early to Mid-season with some sporadic bloom through summer.

Lysimachia nummularia
Creeping Jenny  (Zone 4)
An easily spreading groundcover, this perennial can be used to fill in questionable areas. Yellow flowers bloom in early summer over long trailing  foliage with round leaves. It grows 1-2" tall in full sun to part shade.

Lysimachia nummularia ‘Goldi’
Golden Creeping Jenny  (Zone 4)
A golden variety of the above. Foliage becomes more chartreuse and bright when in a sunny spot. It adds a great contrast when planted near plants with darker foliage.

Mazus reptans
Figwort  (Zone 5)
A great creeping plant for rock gardens or as a ground cover. Its ability to withstand moderate foot traffic makes this an ideal plant between paving stones. It forms dense mats and covers quickly, but is too small and shallow rooted to be considered invasive. Tolerates a wide range of conditions, but grows best in moist soil and partial sun. It produces purple flowers that come up in late spring to early summer. Grows 1-2" tall and 12" wide.

Same as the above but with white flowers.

Pachysandra terminalis
Japanese Spurge  (Zone 4)
Dark evergreen leaves form a solid mat of glossy foliage. Plants reach 6-8" high and are great for planting in mass or under mature trees. Plants colonize quickly to create a naturalized looking woodland shaded area.

Potentilla verna
Spring Cinquefoil  (Zone 4)
Small sunny yellow flowers blanket evergreen foliage in mid to late spring. Beautiful in rock gardens, on stone walls, along pathways, or as a ground cover. Plants in full sun to part shade, it grows 2-3" tall and spreads up to 2’. Plant in an area with low foot traffic. Requires moderate water and tolerates some wetness. 

Sagina subulata
Irish Moss  (Zone 4)
This creeping moss-like groundcover has green foliage and is topped by small white flowers in Early season. The foliage grows less than 1" tall and is great between paving stones or in the rock garden. The foliage remains evergreen in warmer climates. Prefers full sun (although some afternoon shade in the heat of the summer is beneficial) and a really well-drained moist soil. Great for small gardens!

Sagina subulata ‘Aurea’
Scotch Moss  (Zone 4
This selection is typically referred to as Scotch Moss. It is grown for its spreading groundcover habit that is excellent when used in walkways and stone walls. It has bright yellow-green foliage that is topped by small white flowers in early season. It grows best when provided with afternoon shade and well drained soils. The foliage grows to only 2" tall.


Saponaria ocymoides ‘Snowtips’
Soapwort  (Zone 4)

A very hardy and easy to grow plant that is great rambling over stone walls or other boulders. Soapwort has small, white flowers that appear in Early to Mid-season. The glossy, olive green foliage is especially nice if the plants are cut back hard after flowering. A trailing plant that grows about 6" tall with a 30" spread. Plant in full sun to part-shade in a very well-drained soil.

Sedum hispanicum 'Purple Form'
Stonecrop  (Zone 4)
Blue-gray foliage in summer changes to lovely hues of deep blue and purple with the onset of cooler temperatures. Small, star-shaped pink flowers cover the foliage in late summer. Plants grow to 3" tall and are great for edging.

Sedum kamtschaticum
Stonecrop  (Zone 4)
Yellow flowers adorn this sedum in Mid-season. The toothed, dark green foliage is tinged with orange in the fall. This 4-9" tall plant is a great groundcover and will spread readily. Prefers average soils and is great for rock gardens and borders.



Sedum spurium ‘Dragon’s Blood’
Stonecrop  (Zone 4)
The cultivar name, ‘Dragon’s Blood’, very accurately describes the intense, scarlet colored blooms that cover this plant. The Early to Mid-season blooms look dazzling even from a distance against the purplish-red foliage. A wonderful, 4" tall groundcover that is great in any full sun garden with average to poor soil.


 

 

Sedum ternatum ‘Larinem Park’

This late-spring blooming stonecrop is a beautiful addition to the garden! Its’ beautiful soft white flowers are sure to add color to the front of a border, rock garden, or container. This compact plant reaches only 6” tall and performs best when planted in part-shade.



Thymus 'Elfin'
Elfin Thyme  (Zone 5)

As its name indicates, this is a cute little plant. Spreading mats of tiny, deep green leaves create a cushion like effect on the ground. Pink flowers sit atop this plant that only reaches 1" in height.
 

Thymus praecox 'Pink Chintz'
Pink Chintz Thyme  (Zone 5)
This dwarf creeping thyme has fuzzy light-gray leaves and pink flowers, which forms a low growing mat. Only grows to .5 – 3" tall and prefers dry well-drained soil with full sun

Thymus praecox ‘Albiflorus’
White Creeping Thyme  (Zone 5)
This aromatic creeping thyme grows to 2" and has tiny, bright green leaves and starry white flowers that bloom from midsummer to early fall. The foliage forms a low-growing mat, which can tolerate some traffic. Only grows an inch tall.

Thymus serphyllum 'Magic Carpet'
Magic Carpet Thyme  (Zone 5)
Carmine-pink flowers are produced from late spring to summer atop aromatic, dark green foliage. Excellent for use as a groundcover or between stepping stones as it reaches only 2" tall.

Veronica liwanensis
Turkish Speedwell  (Zone 2)
Turkish Speedwell is prostrate and dense, rooting along the stems to make a soil-holding mat. In spring, small spikes of lovely blue flowers cover the plants. Plants are free-flowers and undemanding. With sufficient water, reblooming will occur in late summer. Grows 2-4" tall and 12" wide.

Veronica prostrata 'Heavenly Blue'
Speedwell  (Zone 4)
This cultivar forms a carpet of fine green foliage that is decorated in late spring or early summer with countless small spikes of bright-blue flowers. A great choice for rock gardens or the edge of a sunny border. Because it takes some foot traffic, it can be planted between stones. Grows 3-4" tall and 6" wide.

Veronica ‘Waterperry Blue’
Speedwell  (Zone 4)
‘Waterperry' is undoubtedly one of the best groundcover Veronicas! Growing to only 4-6", this tough plant forms a solid mat of medium green foliage that turns a bronzy-purplish hue with the onset of cooler fall and winter temperatures. Light blue flowers are produced in Mid-season on top of the foliage, which appears to stay at least semi-evergreen (except for the coldest regions of the U.S.). This perennial performs optimally in a full sun, well-drained garden soil.

Waldsteinia ternata
Barren Strawberry  (Zone 4)
This groundcover is quite adaptable to a wide range of sites around the garden as it tolerates sun and light shade. Once established, plants even thrive in the very dry conditions found under trees or on a bank. The foliage, which is evergreen and resembles that of strawberries, builds up into a dense carpet. The flowers, in late spring and early summer, are single, bright yellow, and stand out well against the deep green foliage. Grows 6-8" tall and 4-6" wide.
