Cerastium tomentosum
Snow
in Summer (Zone 2)
The beautiful silver foliage of this species shows off bright white flowers in Early to
Mid-season. Snow-in-summer grows to only 8" tall and if provided with excellent drainage and a little bit of summer shade
it will
form an excellent groundcover. It also works well cascading over a rock wall but
does not do well in extremely hot and humid summers.
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides
Plumbago
(Zone
5)
A
great groundcover for Mid to Late-season interest as its deep blue flowers in
late summer give way to excellent bronze fall color. Grows best in full sun
reaching only 8" tall, and a well-drained garden soil. Nice in rock gardens or
the edge of the perennial border. This plant emerges late in spring and may need a little extra winter
protection in Zone 5A.
Delosperma cooperi
Ice
Plant (Zone 6)
Small bright pink flowers bloom all summer on this rock garden beauty! Small, succulent, egg-shaped leaves form compact mounds reaching 3-6” tall
on this nice groundcover. A South African native, this plant prefers hot dry sites in full
sun, which makes it quite useful for those hard to plant areas.
Dianthus gratianopolitanus ‘Firewitch’
Cheddar
Pinks (Zone 4)
This is another "must have" Dianthus selection. ‘Firewitch’ is a tough, 6" plant with unbelievable magenta blooms
and blue-green foliage. An excellent low growing, clump forming selection blooming heaviest in Early to Mid-season with rebloom
occurring periodically throughout the summer. An excellent choice for the perennial border. Like other Dianthus cultivars, plant
in full sun and well-drained soils, and deadhead to promote continuous bloom.
Euonymus fortunei
'Coloratus'
Purple Wintercreeper (Zone 5)
One of the most common broadleaf evergreen groundcovers. Green foliage turns to
a beautiful burgundy-purple in winter. Great for use along foundations, as an
edging, or for mass plantings. Grows to 12" tall.
Galium odoratum
Sweet
Woodruff (Zone 4)
Sweet
Woodruff is a very versatile groundcover for the part-shade to shade garden. It grows 8-12" tall and produces masses of ¼" white
fragrant flowers in Early-season. It responds well to shady, moist, well-drained areas. Great for naturalizing and mass plantings.
This is an awesome native perennial that is also used for sachets and nosegays. Sweet Woodruff is also considered an herb used for
flavoring May wine. If placed properly, Galium will spread vigorously and weave a shade garden together.
Gypsophila repens
Creeping
Baby's Breath (Zone 3)
This alpine baby's breath is a wonderful choice
for a rock garden or stone wall. Small white flowers are produced from late
spring to early summer on 8" tall plants. Plants perform best in full sun and
dry sandy soil. Plant spread reaches 18" wide.
Gypsophila repens ‘Rosea’
Baby’s
Breath (Zone 3)
Another alpine Baby's breath that is great in rock gardens, stone walls, or the front of the border.
Similar to the straight species only this variety has
rose-pink flowers and grows only 4" tall. ‘Rosea' is a very long bloomer beginning in Early season and continuing all summer.
Plants must have a very well drained soil and perform best in full sun.
Lamium maculatum
'Red Nancy'
Spotted
Dead Nettle (Zone 3)
Rosy-red flowers bloom in late spring on top of beautiful silver leaves that are
lined with a green margin. Plants grow best in average to moist garden soil and
part shade conditions. Grows to 8".
Lamium maculatum ‘White Nancy’
Spotted
Dead Nettle (Zone 3)
‘White Nancy' grows 6-8", and as the name implies, bears white flowers over the
typical silvery-green variegated foliage. It requires average to moist garden soil in part-shade. An excellent, tough groundcover
capable of filling in open spaces in the garden. If it gets too open or leggy, it can be easily be pruned back quite hard to
rejuvenate new clean basal foliage. Although the flowers are a bonus, Lamiums are primarily grown for their bright silvery
foliage. This blooms in Early to Mid-season with some sporadic bloom through summer.
Lysimachia nummularia
Lysimachia nummularia ‘Goldi’
Golden
Creeping Jenny (Zone 4)
A golden variety of the above. Foliage becomes more chartreuse and bright
when in a sunny spot. It adds a great contrast when planted near plants with darker foliage.
Mazus reptans
Figwort (Zone
5)
A great creeping plant for rock gardens or as a ground cover. Its ability to
withstand moderate foot traffic makes this an ideal plant between paving stones.
It forms dense mats and covers quickly, but is too small and shallow rooted to
be considered invasive. Tolerates a wide range of conditions, but grows best in
moist soil and partial sun. It produces purple flowers that come up in late
spring to early summer. Grows 1-2" tall and 12" wide.
Mazus reptans 'Alba'
Figwort (Zone 5)
Same
as the above but with white flowers.
Pachysandra terminalis
Potentilla verna
Sagina subulata
Saponaria ocymoides ‘Snowtips’
Soapwort (Zone
4)
A very hardy and easy to grow plant that is great rambling over stone walls or
other boulders. Soapwort has small, white flowers that appear in Early to
Mid-season. The glossy, olive green foliage is especially nice if the plants are
cut back hard after flowering. A trailing plant that grows about 6" tall with a
30" spread. Plant in full sun to part-shade in a very well-drained soil.
Sedum hispanicum
'Purple Form'
Stonecrop
(Zone
4)
Blue-gray foliage in summer changes to lovely hues of deep blue and purple with
the onset of cooler temperatures. Small, star-shaped pink flowers cover the
foliage in late summer. Plants grow to 3" tall and are great for edging.
Sedum kamtschaticum
Stonecrop
(Zone
4)
Yellow flowers adorn this sedum in Mid-season. The toothed, dark green foliage is tinged with orange in the fall. This 4-9"
tall plant is a great groundcover and will spread readily. Prefers average soils and is great for rock gardens and borders.
Sedum spurium ‘Dragon’s Blood’
Stonecrop
(Zone 4)
The cultivar name, ‘Dragon’s Blood’, very accurately describes the intense, scarlet colored blooms that cover this plant. The
Early to Mid-season blooms look dazzling even from a distance against the purplish-red foliage. A wonderful, 4" tall groundcover
that is great in any full sun garden with average to poor soil.
Sedum ternatum ‘Larinem Park’
Stonecrop
(Zone 4)
This late-spring blooming stonecrop is a beautiful addition to the garden!
Its’ beautiful soft white flowers are sure to add color to the front of a
border, rock garden, or container. This compact plant reaches only 6” tall and
performs best when planted in part-shade.
Thymus 'Elfin'
Elfin Thyme (Zone
5)
As its name indicates, this is a cute little plant. Spreading mats of tiny, deep
green leaves create a cushion like effect on the ground. Pink flowers sit atop this plant that only reaches 1" in height.
Thymus praecox 'Pink Chintz'
Pink Chintz
Thyme (Zone 5)
This dwarf creeping thyme has fuzzy light-gray leaves and pink flowers, which forms a low growing mat.
Only grows to .5 – 3" tall and prefers dry well-drained soil with full sun
Thymus praecox ‘Albiflorus’
White Creeping Thyme (Zone
5)
This aromatic creeping thyme grows to 2" and has tiny, bright green leaves and
starry white flowers that bloom from midsummer to early fall. The
foliage forms a low-growing mat, which can tolerate some traffic. Only
grows an inch tall.
Thymus serphyllum 'Magic Carpet'
Veronica liwanensis
Turkish
Speedwell (Zone 2)
Turkish Speedwell is prostrate and dense, rooting along the stems to make a
soil-holding mat. In spring, small spikes of lovely blue flowers cover the
plants. Plants are free-flowers and undemanding. With sufficient water,
reblooming will occur in late summer. Grows 2-4" tall and 12" wide.
Veronica prostrata 'Heavenly Blue'
Speedwell (Zone
4)
This cultivar forms a carpet of fine green foliage that is decorated in late
spring or early summer with countless small spikes of bright-blue flowers. A
great choice for rock gardens or the edge of a sunny border. Because it takes
some foot traffic, it can be planted between stones. Grows 3-4" tall and 6"
wide.
Veronica ‘Waterperry
Blue’
Speedwell
(Zone
4)
‘Waterperry' is undoubtedly one of the best groundcover Veronicas! Growing to only
4-6", this tough plant forms a solid mat of medium green foliage that turns a bronzy-purplish hue with the onset of cooler fall
and winter temperatures. Light blue flowers are produced in Mid-season on top of the foliage, which appears to stay at least
semi-evergreen (except for the coldest regions of the U.S.). This perennial performs optimally in a full sun, well-drained garden
soil.
Waldsteinia ternata
