This Southeastern U.S. native emerges in spring looking like dark purplish asparagus shoots! The attractive foliage grows to about 24" tall and is topped by large, up to 20", panicles of white pea-like flowers in early summer. It is easy to grow in full sun and average soils!

False Blue Indigo (Zone 3)
This Eastern U.S. native is a wonderful long-lived perennial. Indigo-blue flowers are held erect atop 4' tall shrub-like plants. If grown in full sun no staking is required. The black seedpods are great in dried arrangements. A bit of a slow grower but well worth the wait. Easily grown in low-fertility soils.

Baptisia ‘Carolina Moonlight’

‘Carolina Moonlight’ is a cross between B. alba and B. sphaerocarpa. This selection gives you some of the height of B. alba and the flower color of B. sphaerocarpa. The flower spikes are a creamy-yellow and reach 3’. The foliage is an attractive bluish-green and plants bloom during summer. This is a long blooming variety requiring full sun to part sun and average, well-drained garden soils. Reportedly deer resistant. This perennial would work well as a middle of the border plant and in a wildflower garden.

Baptisia ‘Purple Smoke’

At long last we are able to offer (although in limited quantities!) this beautiful selection that has been a standout performer in our display garden for several years! This long-lived perennial features dark stems topped by purple-blue flowers in early summer. It is similar in size to Baptisia australis, growing to 40" tall. It is easy to grow and long-lived in average garden soil and full sun.

This U.S. Native is very tough. Sturdy soft-yellow to bright-yellow flowers bloom on tall stalks above blue-green foliage in late spring. Plants grow up to 3’ when in flower and grow best in full sun and drier, well-drained soil.

This is the first introduction from the Chicago Botanic Gardens Baptisia breeding program. This is a cross between B. australis and B. sphaerocarpa. The resulting selection possesses exceptional hybrid vigor, especially with its heavy flower show. It will take 2-3 years in the ground for it to reach its peak performance. Deep violet-purple flowers bloom in summer for many weeks. It grows to 4-5’, needs full sun to part sun, and well-drained average garden soils. Makes a great addition to the mixed perennial border or wildflower garden.

Begonia grandis

This hardy begonia will add a wonderful, almost tropical, feel to your shade garden! Pink flowers appear in August atop large, heart-shaped leaves.  The undersides of the leaves have prominent red veins. Mature plants will reach 3' tall. Plants will multiply by forming small bulblets on the stems that drop in fall and root around the base. Late to emerge in spring.

These cabbage looking plants have bright pink flowers in Early season but are grown primarily for their leathery foliage. This cultivar has deep green foliage, which turns a beautiful ruby color in cool weather and holds that color all winter long. This improved selection was chosen for its’ vivid deep ruby-red foliage in winter. In spring, the evergreen foliage turns a dark glossy green and is topped by crimson flowers in springtime. The plants grow to about 10" tall and are best appreciated in mass plantings in the moist shade garden.
