Calamintha grandiflora
Large flowered Calamint  (Zone 4)
This greatly underused member of the mint family is valuable addition to any sunny perennial border. It produces lovely 1½" long purplish-pink flowers in mid-summer. The small medium green leaves are highly aromatic and make great edging and front of the border garden plants. Its small 18" stature easily makes it a versatile massing or companion plant with taller perennials. This perennial can tolerate some part shade, requires well-drained soils, and responds favorably to a hard pruning when overgrown.

This bushy plant has rosy-red flowers in Mid-season. With a little deadheading plants will bloom almost all summer! The glossy green foliage grows to 24" tall in full sun. A great plant for alkaline, well-drained soils it does great when used in and around limestone walls. Centranthus will self-seed and move itself around the garden quite freely.

Cerastium tomentosum

The beautiful silver foliage of this species shows off bright white flowers in Early to Mid-season. Snow-in-summer grows to only 8" tall and if provided with excellent drainage and a little bit of summer shade it will form an excellent groundcover. It also works well cascading over a rock wall but does not do well in extremely hot and humid summers.

Turtlehead looks good along streams, ponds, and in a moist native garden and is a great addition to the fall flowering perennial border!

Cimicifuga racemosa var. cordifolia

This variety of our native Cimicifuga can be used to extend the flowering season as it blooms in mid to late-season. It flowers later than C. ramosa, but before fall flowering types like ‘White Pearl’. The flowers, unlike most other Cimicifuga’s, are not fragrant. Plants require moist woodland type soils with part-shade to shade. Grows 4-4½’ tall and therefore lends itself well to the back of the border. The flowering time of this perennial makes it valuable as it begins to bloom when the garden begins to look somewhat bare!

A great plant for a moist sunny site, ‘Black Negligee’ has shown to be much more vigorous then other dark varieties. Black stems carry the beautiful purple-tinted white flowers which have a scent of grape and jasmine. Plants given more water along with full sun will give the darkest foliage effect. Foliage reaches 4' tall and plants reach 5' tall when in flower. Blooms from late summer until late fall.

This small flowered species features 2-3" semi-double powder blue flowers that are shaped like little lanterns. The flowers are produced in abundance in April and May on low maintenance plants that can grow to reach 12’. This species is unique in that it requires no pruning throughout the year to achieve best flowering. If pruning is desired to maintain size or shape, it should be done immediately after flowering as flowering occurs on the previous season’s stems.

This species has 1-2" nodding yellow flowers covering 15' tall plants. The flowers are followed by wonderful shiny seed heads that persist into Winter. This species will tolerate part-shade but prefers full sun. Cut back hard in early Spring for the best result!

A very unusual 4-6" violet-purple flowers with white marbling infused through the petals! Blooms in June and July and grows to 8-12’. The old growth should be pruned back hard in late April or early May, removing all old top growth back to where new leaf axils appear. Plant top in full sun and always keep root system cool and shaded for maximum performance. Moist well-drained soil and at least a half day of full sun is required.

Coreopsis ‘Autumn Blush’ (PP18184)

This selection is a result of the breeding program at Terra Nova Nursery. 'Autumn Blush' is a hybrid of the native Coreopsis auriculata ‘Nana’. This grows to 24" in foliage with the flower stems at 26". The foliage will spread to 32". The flowers are 1" butter-yellow with a strawberry eye. Cooler temperatures in spring and fall intensify the strawberry coloration. 'Autumn Blush' exhibits vigorous growth as well as abundant flower production. Grows well in full sun to part sun, average well-drained soils. Makes a good cut flower and attracts butterflies. A nice complement to other red-foliaged plants.

'Jethro Tull' is a unique and fun plant with golden yellow flowers that have fluted petals. This floriferous cultivar has wiry stems that hold the flowers above the foliage. Another addition to the ‘Limerock’ series of plants from Blooms of Bressingham. Flowers are a bright tangerine color accented with orange russet tones. It is very pretty color to add in to mixed borders and containers, especially useful since they bloom all summer long. It grows 22" tall and prefers full sun and moist well-drained soil. Like the others in this series, it is best treated as annual, but still worth a try.

'Sunshine Superman' is a great new cultivar of the native Coreopsis pubescens. Low mounds of fuzzy green foliage are topped with gold flowers from early summer to early fall. Grows best in full to part sun, with average well-drained soils. Makes a good cut flower and attracts butterflies. Soil should be well-drained especially in winter. This unique little groundcover has heart-shaped foliage that is mottled with silver. Nodding pink and white flowers float above the foliage and never grow more than 2-4" tall. Use in shaded areas or under trees with little afternoon sun. The foliage goes dormant in summer so the area can be overplanted with annuals. Be careful not to overwater during this time, or corms may rot. Prefers cool, moist conditions.

Cymbalaria muralis

Cute little groundcover with kidney-shaped, scalloped leaves. Lavender flowers resemble violets and bloom all summer long. This plant provides a great covering for stone walls. It loves to attach itself into tiny crevices. It does well almost anywhere, but prefers part sun and cool, moist soil. It sometimes will melt out in hot humid summers. Grows just 2-4" tall, but likes to spread out at least 4", but usually more.
