This is a fantastic variety selected from our endangered Tennessee coneflower. 'Rocky Top' is shorter and longer blooming than its parent plant. Cheery, bright pink, upfacing flowers appear from July to September and the individual flowers always face the same direction. Plants grow 24-30" in full sun and moist to average garden soil. Remove spent flower stems to prolong bloom time. Best used in a meadow, prairie, or natural garden.

Globe thistle is a very tough plant that handles many less then desirable locations in the garden. The foliage is spiny gray-blue with blue spherical flowerheads that bloom from summer through the fall (cooler nights increases the intensity the flower color). Mature plants reach up to 48" tall and spread 36". Ideal for full sun and tolerates poor soils, drought, and the heat. Plants may require staking in fertile soils. Great plant to attract butterflies!

Echinops sphaerocephalus 'Arctic Glow’

Add great texture and form to the perennial border during any season with this plant. Large, white blooms sit atop red stems and silvery green foliage. Foliage is interesting with its’ spiny looking texture. Blooms appear from summer to fall. Plants grow 2-3’ tall and perform best in full to part sun and well-drained soil. They are drought tolerant and seem to prefer poor, dry soils.

Epimedium rubrum
Red Barrenwort  (Zone 5)
This hybrid beauty is probably the best of the epimediums for use as a groundcover! The red flowers are accented with yellow and appear in Early-season before or just as the foliage is beginning to appear. The attractive foliage mounds will reach up to 12" tall and are often tinged with red especially in cool weather. Although slow to establish (and often not the best looking plant in a nursery container) this plant is great as a woodland groundcover and although it prefers constant moisture, once established will tolerate dry shade. Epimediums are very pest and disease resistant!

Epimedium versicolor ‘Sulphureum’
Barrenwort  (Zone 5)
This hybrid selection is probably the best for the dry shade conditions that epimediums are often selected to fill. The heart-shaped leaves are very attractive and often tinged with red in cooler weather. The sulphur-yellow flowers appear in Early-season as the new foliage is starting to emerge. The foliage mound of this hybrid will reach 12" tall and is often evergreen with flushes of new foliage in early spring. A great plant for the shaded woodland garden!

Eryngium ‘Blue Hobbit'

Touted as being the first dwarf blue Eryngium, ‘Blue Hobbit’ grows to only 24". The stems are a silvery-blue color with the traditional blue globe-like flower heads. Plants grow best in full sun and well-drained garden soils. Sea Holly are considered drought tolerant and have very minimal watering requirements.  Makes a great specimen or accent plant with its unusual foliage and flower heads.

'Sapphire Blue' is an improved selection over the straight species. Growing to 28", this sea holly is an excellent source of fresh or dried cut flowers. The large flowers, on steely blue sturdy stems, are produced in mid to late summer. Plants grow best in full sun, and average well-drained soils. With its unusual flower appearance and color, this perennial will contrast nicely with other summer blooming perennials. These make attractive specimen and mixed border plants. Be careful handling these, as the flowers are spiny and rigid!

Eupatorium maculatum ‘Atropurpureum’

An Eastern U.S. native that is a stately choice for the back of the border or wild garden. It has purplish flower heads in late season atop 6-8’ tall plants. Plants need moist to wet soils and full sun to be at their best. This is a large, coarse plant that deserves more attention in American gardens.

Eupatorium maculatum ‘Gateway’

'Gateway' is a shorter, sturdier improved selection of our native Joe Pye Weed. The foliage and flower appearance is similar to the straight species, however 'Gateway' grows to only 5’ (about 2-3’ shorter than its parent). The large, bold, green foliage and purple spotted stems compliment the large lavender flower heads quite nicely. Blooms in late summer into fall. Grows best in a consistently moist organic soil with full to part-sun. Can be used effectively in the perennial border as a tall fall blooming background or specimen plant. Leave enough room in the garden for this to reach its full height and width! Excellent as a butterfly and wildlife attractant. Combines well with other fall blooming perennials such as Asters, Dendranthema, Grasses, and Sedums.

Similar to ‘Gateway’, this is another outstanding dwarf Eupatorium selection. ‘Little Joe’ grows to only 4’ – one of the shortest on the market! With its strongly upright habit and shorter stature, this variety will probably be easier and more manageable to use in the perennial border. The large green foliage and lilac flower heads are identical to the parent plant. This cultivar is ideal for areas where a more compact Joe Pye Weed is required – either for height control or less maintenance. Great as a butterfly and wildlife attractant. This coarse-textured selection of the U.S. native has umbels of white flowers in Late-season, which contrast nicely against the chocolate-colored foliage. Chubby in habit, ‘Chocolate’ grows 4-5’ tall in full sun to part-shade in moist but well-drained soils. Cut plants back hard after flowering to encourage lush foliage.

This selection is primarily grown for its unusual greenish-yellow flower bracts and tough evergreen habit. The bracts appear in Mid-season above the plain green foliage. They grow 6-9" tall and can spread at least 12", but sometimes like to wander farther.
