Monarda ‘Blue Stocking’
Bee Balm  (Zone 3)
Violet-blue flowers on 3’ tall stems. Sweetly scented, mint-like leaves have a somewhat bluish cast. Prefers moist conditions and would be a great choice for naturalizing or use near a water feature. Attracts bees and hummingbirds. Naturalizes readily to the point where it might be considered too invasive for small plantings. Most Monardas are to some extent susceptible to powdery mildew, which is not fatal to the plant, but can be unsightly. Some cultivars are more resistant than others.

Monarda ‘Coral Reef’ (PPAF)
Bee Balm  (Zone 4)
Bright, showy, coral-pink flowers bloom in mid- to late-summer on this 36-42" beauty! The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden and are also great in fresh flower arrangements as they have a nice fragrance. Plant in part-sun with average well-drained soil. Similar to ‘Marshall’s Delight’ with the same level of mildew resistance, however, be sure to space properly in the garden to help prevent any possible incidence of powdery mildew. Selective thinning of plant stems will help increase air circulation at the ground level.

Monarda ‘Dark Ponticum'

Deep forest green foliage seems to have a good mildew resistance. Violet-blue flowers bloom in summer. This is a strong grower with a compact, upright habit and grows 3’ tall. Full sun to part shade with good air circulation around the plants will help them perform their best.

Monarda fistulosa ‘Claire Grace’
Bee Balm  (Zone 3)
This bee balm has light lavender blooms in the summer on 3’ tall plants with shiny green foliage. It is a great native for butterfly gardens, mixed borders, and for cut flowers. Place plants in full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. ‘Claire Grace’ is resistant to powdery mildew making it a better choice or possible replacement for Monarda ‘Mahagony’.

Monarda Grand ParadeTM (PPAF) ('Acrade')

Grand ParadeTM is the latest in a series of great dwarf Monarda’s from the Morden Breeding Program in Manitoba, Canada. This new selection grows to only 16" with an upright habit. Flowers are an attractive lavender purple and bloom for many weeks in mid-summer. The foliage is highly aromatic and the flowers make good cut flowers. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Prefers full to part sun with average to constantly moist soil. Foliage is mildew resistant and deer resistant.

Very large, bright red flowers appear in Mid-season on 4’ stems. Prefers moist conditions and would be an excellent choice for naturalizing by a water feature. Again, like all Monardas, have the sweetly scented leaves. Great for attracting birds and hummingbirds. Probably one of the best choices for powdery mildew resistance.

Dwarf Bee Balm  (Zone 3)
A dwarf Monarda! Tidy, lavender-rose flowers appear on this 12-15" tall plant. When in bloom this variety resembles a pot mum! Like all Monarda it prefers moist growing conditions. This is a great selection as it forms a nice clump and has attractive, dark green foliage. Appears to be mildew resistant.

Monarda ‘Raspberry Wine’

This Eastern U.S. native is perfect for the back of the border, as a cut flower, or for use in naturalized areas. The flower buds actually resemble raspberries and open up to clear wine-colored flowers in summer, hence the name ‘Raspberry Wine’. At 3-4’ tall and 2’ wide this plant is sure to stand out in your garden!

Muehlenbeckia axillaris

Wiry stems hold glossy green round leaves, and create a nice texture. Trailing habit makes it a good groundcover for perennial beds or as a filler in containers. Flowers are insignificant, but white fruits emerge with black seeds to add interest. It grows 3-6" tall and can spread about 6". It prefers full sun and well drained soil.

Nice spring bloomer with a compact growth habit and large pink flowers. Grows 5-8" tall in full to part sun. Tolerant of a variety of soil types.

Myosotis sylvatica ‘Victoria Blue’
Forget-Me-Not  (Zone 4)
This woodland selection comes from a European species that is more tolerant of a wide range of soils. ‘Victoria Blue’ is an early bloomer with the traditional gentian-blue flowers found on the more common Myosotis scorpioides. The plants grow to about 8" tall and are excellent in the part-shade border. They are not particularly long lived, but they do self seed so as to appear perennial in the garden.

Chinese Catmint  (Zone 4)
A little known, underused species, this nepeta is a good one to try. It has glossy green leaves and large lavender-blue flowers. Grows to 18" in well-drained soil and sun to part-shade. Flowers from June to July. It makes a good cut flower.

A work-horse in commercial plantings (see City of Dublin, Ohio) this is a great choice for long bloom in any border. Silver foliage is topped in Mid-season by lavender blooms that keep going and going. The fragrant foliage holds up well and is great when used as an edging plant or in mass. Grows to 18" tall in full sun and average well-drained soils.

Nepeta x faassenii ‘Walker’s Low’

A prolific bloomer with bluish purple flower spikes atop gray-green foliage in Mid-season and lasting into fall. A compact grower at only 18" tall it is one of the best that we have grown. Named for the English garden and not its growth habit, ‘Walker’s Low’ is great as an edger, in mass plantings, or in any sunny border. Easy to grow in average garden soil. Nepeta 'Walker's Low' was voted the 2007 Perennial Plant of the Year by the PPA!

Deep purple blooms persist for an extender period through the summer. Plants are a cross between N. siberica and N. x faassenii, so they have the cold hardiness of the siberica and the prolific blooming of x faassenii. Grows up to 3’ in full sun.

A good plant for the front of the border or along walkways, 'Little Titch' is a prostrate grower reaching only 10" tall. It has pale-blue flowers atop highly scented foliage. This species tends to self-seed making it a perfect choice for the informal cottage-type garden. Grows best in full sun to light shade an well-drained soils.
